Grace O'Malley (Granuaile)

Legendary Pirate Queen of the West

Grace O'Malley (Granuaile) is the legendary 16th century Pirate Queen of Connaught who commanded fourteen castles around Clew Bay. She's particularly celebrated in the west of Ireland and is a fascinating female historical figure.

Grace is my 14th great-grandmother, which sparked my interest in her story. Around 1566, she married Richard Burke and had one son, Tibbot Na Long Burke (Toby of the Seas) – it's through this lineage that I exist today.

Grace's great-great-granddaughter Maude Burke married John Browne of Westport in 1669, beginning the Browne family connection.

Art Inspired by Granuaile

Grace O'Malley's legacy continues to inspire my artwork and they're particularly popular with those interested in Irish heritage. Explore the collections here and choose a piece of Granuaile's legacy for your living space or as a special gift.
